Niepokalanów near Teresin, between Warsaw and Sochaczew, was founded in 1927 by the Franciscan friar Maximilian Maria Kolbe. The friary became a centre of Marian apostolate and publishing, which spread among others the magazine "Knight of the Immaculate". Today its heart is the Basilica of the Immaculate Mediatrix of All Graces.
Pilgrims come here in the footsteps of Saint Maximilian, who in 1941 gave his life for a fellow prisoner in Auschwitz and was canonised in 1982. Visitors can see places linked to his life and pray in the basilica, which Saint John Paul II visited in 1983.
