The Basilica of Our Lady and Saint Bartholomew in Piekary Śląskie has long been the spiritual centre of Upper Silesia. The image of Our Lady of Piekary venerated here was crowned in 1925. Next to the basilica is a Calvary with chapels of the Way of the Cross and the mysteries of the Rosary.
Pilgrims come to Our Lady, venerated as Mother of Justice and Social Love, entrusting to her their families, their work and the social concerns of the region. The sanctuary is especially close to miners and workers, and in difficult times for the Church it became a place to express faith and solidarity.
The largest gatherings are the pilgrimage of men and young men on the last Sunday of May and the pilgrimage of women and girls in August, around the Solemnity of the Assumption. Piekary is close to Katowice.
