The shrine was founded in the second half of the 19th century by Bartolo Longo, a lay lawyer who after his conversion devoted his life to spreading the rosary. In 1875 he brought an image of Our Lady of the Rosary to the valley of Pompeii, and construction of the church soon began. A new town and charitable works for children grew up around it.
Pilgrims come to pray before the miraculous image and to say the rosary. In Poland the shrine is especially known through the Pompeii novena. Bartolo Longo, honoured as the apostle of the rosary, rests in the basilica.
The high points of the year are the solemn recitation of the Supplication to the Queen of the Holy Rosary on 8 May and on the first Sunday of October. The shrine lies next to the excavations of ancient Pompeii, not far from Naples.
