Šaštín lies in western Slovakia, in the Záhorie region. The origins of the shrine are linked to a 16th-century Pietà statue, founded according to tradition as a votive offering by the noblewoman Angelika Bakičová. In the 18th century a Baroque basilica and monastery were built here, for a long time run by the Pauline Fathers.
