Velehrad is a village in Moravia, near Uherské Hradiště. At the beginning of the 13th century a Cistercian abbey was founded here, and the present Baroque basilica was built after destruction in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tradition links the place with Great Moravia and the mission of Sts Cyril and Methodius.
Pilgrims come to honour the Apostles of the Slavs, patrons of Europe, and to pray for Christian unity, with which Velehrad has long been associated. Pope St John Paul II visited the shrine in 1990. Beneath the basilica there is a lapidarium with remains of earlier buildings.
The most important event is the national pilgrimage around 5 July, the feast of Sts Cyril and Methodius, a public holiday in Czechia. The nearest larger towns are Uherské Hradiště and Zlín.
