The Basilica of St Mary Magdalene crowns the hill on which the Burgundian town of Vézelay stands. From the 11th century the abbey was famous for relics of St Mary Magdalene and drew crowds of pilgrims. In 1146 St Bernard of Clairvaux preached the Second Crusade here. The basilica and hill are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Pilgrims come to pray at the relics of Mary Magdalene, first witness of the Resurrection. The Romanesque interior is famous for its carved capitals and the tympanum showing Christ sending out the Apostles. Since 1993 prayer in the basilica has been led by the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. Vézelay is also the start of the Via Lemovicensis, one of the four traditional French routes to Santiago.
The memorial of St Mary Magdalene falls on 22 July. The nearest larger towns are Avallon and Auxerre.
