Paray-le-Monial is a small town in Burgundy, known for its Romanesque Basilica of the Sacred Heart, built in the spirit of the abbey of Cluny. Between 1673 and 1675, in the chapel of the Visitation convent, Jesus appeared to St Margaret Mary Alacoque, showing her his Heart full of love for humanity.
Pilgrims come to the chapel of the apparitions, where the saint's relics rest, and to the chapel with the relics of St Claude de la Colombière, the Jesuit who was her confessor and supported the spread of the devotion.
