San Giovanni Rotondo in Apulia, on the slopes of the Gargano massif, is where the Capuchin St Pio of Pietrelcina lived from 1916 until his death in 1968. In the friary beside the church of Our Lady of Grace he heard confessions, celebrated Mass and received crowds of the faithful. He also founded the hospital known as the Home for the Relief of Suffering.
